Last weekend, a race took place in Brittany, which featured a number of big name cyclists, including a pair who won both the Tour de France and World Championships – Bernard Hinault and Stephen Roche

The 8th edition of the Critérium des Champions d’Hier took place last Saturday in the town of Pipriac and this year’s edition was to mark the inauguration of the Stephen Roche circuit in the town. Last year’s event honoured Dutch rider Joop Zoetemelk.

Other former pros who lined up in the race included Stephen’s brother Laurence, Cyrille Guimard, Angel Arroyo, Laurent Biondi, Jacques Bossis, Philippe Bouvatier, Christian Jourdan and Regis Simon.

Also in attendance was the remarkable Robert Marchand. The 104 year-old broke his own World Record for the hour in the over-100 age group when he set a distance of 26.927 kilometres.

For the record, Roche “won” the race ahead of his breakaway companion Arroyo, with former La Vie Claire and RMO rider Jean-François Rault winning the bunch sprint for third.
