With an impressive sprint finish Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain Merida Pro Cycling) won the Coppa Bernocchi again yesterday, following on from his victory last year. Colbrelli took the win ahead of Manuel Belletti (Androni Giocattoli – Sidermec) with Paolo Simion (Bardiani – CSF) in third.

It was the 100th edition of the Italian race, part of the Trittico Lombardo series, with a start and finish in Legnano, north of Milan. It’s a race that’s suited to sprinters and Sonny Colbrelli was among the favourites.

Colbrelli’s team helped to control the race, working to reel in the early breakaway and the numerous attacks, both during the challenging six laps of the Valle Olona circuit which included the Morazzone climb and in the final city circuit to be repeated three times. The race came down to a sprint which Cobrelli won easily.

“I never could have won without the help of my teammates” commented the Italian rider. “They have been fantastic. I had just to raise my arms to celebrate. Grega Bole and Giovanni Visconti lead me out perfectly. Wang did a good job too, working at the front of the peloton in the finale to bridge the gap to the four attackers.

“Happily we succeeded to catch them and I could sprint very well. I want to dedicate this win to my family, especially to Adelina that soon will give birth to our baby girl”.

“We faced the race with personality yesterday too, but we had less luck than today. Instead today we had good legs and luck as well” explained Bahrain Merida Directeur Sportif Alberto Volpi “The team worked very well, especially in the final circuit. Then with a guy like Sonny, a sprint win comes easily. I said to the boys this morning at the team meeting, that I wanted a squad with grinta and so it was”.
