Dutch rider Robert Gesink (Team Lotto NL Jumbo) has suffered a lot of tragedy and bad luck over the past number of years, but he had some good news to share yesterday, with the birth of his son Bram. He tweeted the following message.

In 2010, Gesink’s father died of injuries from a cycling crash. He suffered a serious crash in the Bart Brentjens Challenge, a mountain bike ride in South Limburg, the Netherlands. The following year, Gesink broke his leg in four places when he crashed in training.

He would crash out of the 2012 Tour de France and in 2014, he was unable to start the Tour due to health issues. Later last season, he had to withdraw from the Vuelta when lying in seventh place overall to return to his wife’s bedside when she took ill whilst pregnant. So, hopefully this will be the start of a change in fortune for the Dutchman.
