The UCI have today announced that there was no basis to proceed further in relation to the biological passport investigation against the Colombian rider Sergio Henao.

The investigation was in relation to his Athlete Biological Passport (ABP) values. The independent experts of the Athlete Passport Management Unit* (APMU) had requested more information from the Team Sky rider in relation to his values.

After a review of the additional information, the experts have now concluded that the investigation will not go any further.

Henao had been withdrawn from racing last month after the investigation was opened up. Henao was informed by the UCI of a “potential anti-doping rule violation”

The Colombian climber had previously been withdrawn by Team Sky for three months back in 2014 following on from their own analysis of his ABP and out-of-competiton tests.

After an investigation was commissioned by the team, the findings were sent to WADA, the UCI and the Colombian Anti-Doping Federation, and he was given the green light to return to racing.

UCI statement on Sergio Henao

On 20 April 2016, in accordance with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Athlete Biological Passport (ABP) Operating Guidelines, the independent experts of the Athlete Passport Management Unit* (APMU) in Lausanne, Switzerland, requested further information from Sergio Henao about his ABP values.

As per the applicable ABP regulations, the rider’s explanations were sent to the same experts for review. After examination, the independent experts came to the conclusion that there was no basis to proceed further.

In light of the confidential nature of the information concerned, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) and the Cycling Anti-Doping Foundation (CADF) are not in a position to comment further.

* The CADF, the independent body mandated by the UCI to plan and carry out anti-doping in cycling, handles the management of the ABP in collaboration with the APMU in Lausanne. ABP cases are prosecuted based on the opinion of an independent Expert Panel of the APMU.
