Irish time-trial champion Ryan Mullen is set to make his debut for the Cannondale-Garmin team at the Tour of Britain which starts in Anglesea this Sunday. He is expected to be announced as part of the six-man team which will aim to repeat their win in last year’s edition.

Dutchman Dylan van Baarle won the race for Garmin last year after taking over the race lead from Alex Dowsett on the exciting seventh stage of the race to Brighton, where he finished in third place.

Also expected to support van Baarle will be Alberto Bettiol, Ruben Zepunkte, Kristijan Koren and Alan Marangoni. The race starts with a 178-kilometres stage from Beaumaris, Anglesey to Wrexham, and the roads of the opening stage will be familiar to Mullen as he grew up in North Wales.

Mullen has excelled in time-trials during his career, having placed second in the Under 23 world championship time trial last year, losing out on gold by just 0.48 seconds to Campbell Flakemore of Australia.

The Tour of Britain will give Mullen the chance to fine tune his preparations for the forthcoming World Championships in Richmond, USA later this month where he will hope to go one better than last year.
