It’s only a relatively recent addition to the Tour of Flanders, but the Paterberg has already achieved legendary status. With a maximum gradient of 20.33% and an average gradient of over 12%, it’s one of the steepest climbs of the race, along with the Koppenberg.

In addition, the Paterberg along with the Oude Kwaremont, are the only climbs that the riders will tackle more than once. The second ascent of the Paterberg may well be where the race is decided as it is the final climb of the day, coming just 13 kilometres from the finish.

The climb is also one of the locations on the course with a great atmosphere. The film below shows what it’s like on the climb on the day of De Ronde as thousands of fans make their way to the climb to drink beer, eat frites and wait for the race to arrive.
