Rafal Majka will be the team leader for BORA – hansgrohe at the forthcoming Vuelta a España where he will be aiming for a high placing on GC.

The Polish rider will be supported by strong climbers like Emanuel Buchmann, Patrick Konrad and Pawel Poljanski. Michael Schwarzmann will be the team’s rider for the sprints. However, Leopold König will not take part as the team do not want to risk aggravating his knee injury.

Majka won the Tour of Slovenia (UCI 2.1) in June, in addition to finishing 2nd overall at both the Amgen Tour of California (2.UWT) and the Tour de Pologne (2.UWT).

“I think we have a well-balanced squad to support Rafal but also to go for stage wins. Rafal will be our GC leader with the goal to finish in the top five. But we also want to win a stage, and I think there will be chances for Buchmann and Konrad in some stages.” said Ralph Denk, Team Manager

“After his long-lasting knee irritation, Leo feels better now,” said Jan-Niklas Droste, BORA – hansgrohe Team Doctor about Leopold König. “He had his first race in San Sebastian, but we think he is not ready yet for a three-week tour, the intensity for his knee could be too high. To not take any risk for his long-term perspectives he won’t race the Vuelta.”

The 72nd Vuelta a España starts on 19 August in Nimes, France with a 13.8-kilometre team time-trial.
