Bicycle rides are set to take place across Australia to protest against bike helmet laws. The rides will take place on 17 March in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. A ride is also taking place in Wellington, New Zealand.

The first ‘Stop Fining Healthy Transport’ ride which is looking to make helmet wearing optional took place in Victoria this year, and there was follow-up interest across the country resulting in additional rides set to take place next March.

Mandatory helmet laws were first introduced to Victoria in 1990, and were later introduced to the other states and territories in the following years. The laws have resulted in a considerable amount of debate over the years.

The organisers are still looking for people to run Tasmania, Australian Capital Territory and Northern Territory rides and you can find out more information on the Freestyle Cyclists Facebook page – https://www.facebook.com/FreestyleCyclists/
