A spectator at last year’s Tour Cycliste Antenne Réunion who caused a crash at the sprint finish when he dragged the finish line barriers across the road as the riders were sprinting for the win has been sentenced to prison for ten months according to Francetvinfo.fr.

Bernard Boyer, the father of cyclist Jonathan Boyer, said that he was angry after his son crashed and the race was not neutralised.

Several cyclists were injured as a result of Boyer’s actions including South African rider Bradley Potgieter who broke his collarbone. In addition, one child who was spectating, was reported to have had his finger severed.

“I did not want to hurt anybody and I apologise for that, and I told the riders who fell and their loved ones,” Boyer told the Journal de l’Île.

“When I saw my son in this state, with blood coming out of my mouth and nose, I was very angry. Not to stop the race meant that the riders were going to be in full sprint at the place where he was being taken care of. I wanted to protect him from the danger. The only solution I found was to pull that barrier. But it was to divert the riders, not to make them fall,” he claimed.

Boyer has ten days to appeal his sentence.
