World Road Race champion Peter Sagan will compete at the mountain biking event at Rio 2016, rather than the road event it has been announced.

The road race circuit to be used in Rio is particularly hilly and may not have best suited Sagan’s strengths, so the Tinkoff rider has decided to race in the off-road event instead.

Sagan returned to his mountain bike roots recently, taking part in two races in Austria and Czech Republic.

“Peter will do some special training for four weeks. He will go to Rio to aim for a good position,” said Slovak Cycling Association head Peter Privara.

In addition to the specific MTB training, Sagan already a World Champion in the discipline as a junior in 2008, will also take part in the Tour de France in the coming weeks.
