A pedestrian in London confronted a cyclist recently after the cyclist continued over a zebra crossing as people were crossing the road.

The footage was captured by another cyclist who had stopped at the crossing. In the footage, the pedestrian can be seen starting to cross when he stops as he sees the cyclist approaching.

He then stops the cyclist from passing and can be heard saying: “You have to stop, it’s the law, it’s the law”. He blocked the cyclist for a few seconds before the cyclist eventually continues on.

According to Rule 195 of The Highway Code:

As you approach a zebra crossing
• look out for pedestrians waiting to cross and be ready to slow down or stop to let them cross
• you MUST give way when a pedestrian has moved onto a crossing
• allow more time for stopping on wet or icy roads
• do not wave or use your horn to invite pedestrians across; this could be dangerous if another vehicle is approaching
• be aware of pedestrians approaching from the side of the crossing.

    • Very true Kev and this situation in London banning trucks is mental. Would you go anywhere near a truck on your bike knowing that they can’t see you? No so why ban the truck ban the stupid dick on the bike.

    • Seems like they were both dicks.

A spokesman from the Metropolitan police said: ‘A cyclist may pass behind a pedestrian (with due care and consideration) but must “accord precedence” i.e. allow a pedestrian to cross first unless the pedestrian is on the opposite carriageway and there is a central island.’

    • I’m in that video at the end, I pull up to the right of the guy with the camera, that’s me with the hi viz top and blue and black bag 🙂 the guy that jumped the crossing jumped every red light the whole way out past Putney until I pulled left into the park. No idea how he made some of them but Darwinism will probably catch up with him at some point.

  1. Saw what I like to call a try hard. Smashed it past me, standing up sitting and back again…..I know you can’t get down the road without the lights changing at the other end……so I was just cruising. Sure enough, red light….fluorescent clad try hard with panniers went straight through……what a knob head.

  2. Agree perhaps the cyclist was a bit of a tool … but had the pedestrian not stopped, and stepped back to make a point, there wouldn’t have been an issue as the cyclist was as far over and going for what they would have expected to be a safe path. Pedestrian stopping like they did made it look worse that it would have been. Had that pedestrian been walking the other way then I’d agree. I’d still have stopped though 😉

    • He is a road user whilst on a bike he has to stop for pedestrians to cross not ride through the gaps.if he cant wait then he has to dismount and walk across simples really read the highway code

  3. I’m not going to defend this cyclist. In a situations liike this we should be stopping. His argument no doubt would be that he was cycling behind someone who, if he had kept walking would have been halfway across the crossing. It is quite frankly ridiculous that this is appearing on news websites like the Daily Mail and the Evening Standard as if it is in any way news. It’s not news, it’s just a very naughty boy.

  4. Good. I’m a cyclist and constantly frustrated and annoyed by some other bike riders who don’t obey road laws. Most do, but some don’t. Let’s keep everyone safe and all road users – drivers, bike riders and pedestrians – need to do the right thing.

    • Exactly….not fully sure if the pedestrian looked left before stepping onto the crossing. I did notice he did’t stop and walk back in front of the taxi that nearly got him on the other side. Think he may have taken his fustration out on the cyclist who was a easier and safer proposition for him to confront. Cyclist was wrong, should have been way more cautious when approaching the crossing.

  5. A missile launcher on top of the traffic light would sort that out. Blast the twats that give all of us a bad name and fuel the fires of shit rags like the daily mail!

  6. Some bad bikers but what I see here it’s cars. Much more difficult to confront cars when the risk is so much higher and they don’t want to spill their Starbucks. Always yield to pedestrians and cars please yield to us…

  7. As a cyclist, I like to give pedestrians the respect I wish motorists would give to me. Who knows, maybe they’ll pay the respect forward to some other cyclist next time they’re behind the wheel 🙂

  8. Not news.
He only gives “cyclists” a bad name amongst those people who are already prejudiced against cyclists.
Every day I see drivers on mobile phones, speeding, driving through red lights etc etc. Do we say that they “give drivers a bad name”? No – we accept that SOME drivers are idiots.
This cyclists behaviour has nothing to do with me.

  9. Maybe he is related to the twat who cycled round the Lilly pop lady (who was standing in the road) outside the school and then proceeded to cycle along the pavement packed with school children! And yes we did all shout abuse at him (mild abuse as kids present). He could equally be buddies with the group who decided to stop for coffee in maldon highstreet, chaining their bikes outside said coffee shop completely blocking the pavement so I had to walk in the road with the pram!

  10. pedestrian was a dick. the cyclist was obviously going behind him and read the situation fine. the pedestrian then stops and turns back to get in his way. i mean, the cyclist was cutting it tight, but there is no reason to turn around and get physical with him to teach him a lesson. calm down, everyone.

  11. If he’d carried on walking the cyclist would not have been a problem, and the cyclist anticipiated that. I’m afraid if that happened to me I would have battered the pedestrian, simple.
