The Tour de France entered the mountains today with the first of three stages in the Pyrenees.

The 162.5-kilometre stage took the riders from L’Isle-Jourdain to Lac de Payolle and the riders faced two categorised climbs along the way including the first category Col d’Aspin.

Steve Cummings (Dimension Data for Qhubeka) rode away from his breakaway companions which included Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) as they raced towards the Aspin and stayed clear to take a brilliant solo win.

It was the third Grand Tour stage win of his career for the 35 year-old Briton having won Stage 13 of the 2012 Vuelta a Espana and Stage 13 of the 2015 Tour de France.

Greg van Avermaet (BMC Racing) had been expected by some to lose the yellow jersey but managed to increase his lead having also infiltrated the break.
