Simon Yates (ORICA-BikeExchange) took his first Grand Tour stage win with a well-timed attack on the sixth stage of the Vuelta España yesterday from Monforte de Lemos to Luintra. Ribera Sacra.

The British rider followed an attack by Dani Moreno (Movistar) inside the closing kilometres before going clear alone to take the stage win. Yates finished 20 seconds ahead of a chasing group of six riders which was led home by Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana Pro Team). Yates’ efforts have now moved him up on GC from 15th place overall to 10th.

Darwin Atapuma (BMC Racing Team) maintained his overall lead, with Alejandro Valverde (Movistar Team) 28″ behind with Chris Froome (Team Sky) a further four seconds down. The race continues today with a 158.5-kilometre stage from Maceda to Puebla de Sanabria.
