LottoNL-Jumbo’s Robert Gesink took the Queen stage of the Vuelta a España yesterday, which featured four big climbs – the Col Inharpu, the Col du Soudet, the Col de Marie-Blanque and the Col d’Aubisque.

The Dutchman was first across the line at the Col d’Aubisque, powering away from Kenny Elissonde (FDJ) and Egor Silin (Team Katusha) 300 metres from the line for his maiden grand tour stage win. Gesink, dropped by his breakaway companions on the descent from the Col de Marie-Blanque, eventually rejoined a reduced leading group before showing he was the strongest on the day.

Briton Simon Yates attacked to move up to fourth overall, one place behind his ORICA-BikeExchange team mate Esteban Chaves. Spaniard Alberto Contador (Tinkoff) and Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) both lost ground and dropped out of the top 5. Nairo Quintana (Movistar) still leads Chris Froome (Team Sky) by 54 seconds but could not drop the Briton despite several attacks.
