Orica Green-EDGE won yesterday’s opening stage of the Giro d’Italia, a 17.6 kilometre team time-trial from San Lorenzo al Mare to Sanremo.

It was the second year in a row that they won the team time-trial in the Giro, and this enabled Simon Gerrans to take the first pink jersey of the race.

Orica-Green Edge had checked out the course three times before the stage, twice on Friday and once again on Saturday morning. They won the stage by seven seconds over Tinkoff-Saxo with Astana in third at thirteen seconds.

This onboard footage from the bike of the diminutive Colombian rider, Esteban Chaves, shows how the team keep the gaps between wheels to a minimum. Chaves was amongst the six riders to cross the line together.
