Nicolas Roche (BMC Racing) has withdrawn from the Giro d’Italia on today’s fifteenth stage from Tolmezzo to Sappada. The Irishman withdrew at the feedzone at Vodo di Cadore. Prior to today’s stage, he had been in 65th place overall, over one hour and twenty minutes behind race leader Simon Yates (Michelton-Scott).

His BMC Racing team announced the news in a tweet and they also stated that another of the team’s riders Loïc Vliegen had also left the race due to illness.

His withdrawal brings to an end his remarkable run of Grand Tour finishes. Roche had finished all eighteen Grand Tours he had started prior to this year’s Giro, including eight Tours de France, three Giri d’Italia and the Vuelta a Espana seven times.
