20 year-old Regan Gough followed up on his win in the New Zealand National U23 Time Trial Championships two days ago by also taking the U23 Road Race title today.

The new signing for An Post Chain Reaction was amongst the riders who made it across to an early breakaway which escaped on the circuit in Napier on the North Island.

The pace was high from the start and crosswinds caused havoc, but Gough managed to stay out of trouble. He gave chase to the leaders to make it across to the winning group which also included World Tour riders Thomas Scully (Cannondale-Drapac Pro Cycling Team) and Jack Bauer (Quick Step Floors).

Unfortunately for Gough, on the last big climb he punctured. After a quick wheel change though, he chased hard and managed to get back to the lead group with ten kilometres remaining.

Meanwhile, two riders escaped to fight for the win with Joseph Cooper taking the title ahead of Jason Christie. Gough’s group came in 18″ down with the An Post rider managing to outsprint James Fouche for the U23 title and take fifth place in the race.
