A naked cyclist was pulled over on Sunday by police in New Zealand, not for indecent exposure, but for not wearing a helmet.

When questioned by the police in Timaru, it was also established that the cyclist was under the influence of alcohol. He hasn’t been charged with drunk cycling though, as no legal alcohol limit for cycling currently exists. However, he still may be charged with the offence of careless use of a vehicle.

Senior police sergeant Randel Tikitiki has said that the man wasn’t charged with indecent exposure, because, perhaps vitally, ‘that would depend on what could be seen’.

Tikitiki said the cyclist could also have been charged with careless use of a vehicle, but police opted to charge him with not wearing a helmet.
