Amid the chaotic scenes on Mont Ventoux yesterday when Richie Porte (BMC Racing), Chris Froome (Team Sky) and Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo) crashed after piling into the back of motorbike which had been stopped by crowds, a video has been posted showing Nairo Quintana (Movistar) hanging onto the back of Mavic motorbike on the climb.
The video was posted by Twitter user @assekevin and was filmed at the spot where the accident took place.
Froome can be seen setting off with his broken bike as Porte gets a push from spectators. Seconds later, Quintana who had been dropped rides past holding onto a wheel on the back of a Mavic support motorbike.

Time penalty for Nairo? Or a transfer to Astana?

Starting to lose all respect for Quintana. Refuses to actually race and now caught cheating at a time that as far as he was concerned he was potentially gaining time on a crashed yellow jersey wearer.
An energy gel is a bit different to taking a tow from a motorbike, especially to get past a crash 😉 I use to really like Quintana but he’s not doing himself any favours 🙁
Really, are you serious, i bet if he asnt holding to that bike he probably would be going att he same speed due to the crowd. I mean after someone falls i would think it safer to hold on to something so it wont happen to you as well. Plus is not like was holding on to the bike that long.

I think he’s struggling, Froome is clearly stronger, but how much time would Froome have lost without that gel? More than the 20 second penalty! I just hope Quintana and Porte can make a race out of it in the last week

Quintana was ordered to hold that wheel, only obeying orders
Velocast Productions seen this?
Cheat.
Scummy move
Rolla Wayne another twist to the saga
Et ça Maxime Arnoult tu trouve ça normal ?
If it was Chris froome people would be praising it
Exactly lad
Every pro bike rider in the world has done it at some stage.sticky bottles and all that stuff
Of course they wouldn’t!
If it was Chris Froome he would have cycled up not taken an illegal tow. I like Quintana but this is blatant cheating. Nibali was thrown off the Vuelta for taking an illegal tow.
Ian Ross froome got to stay in the race for assaulting a fan yet other riders have gotten thrown off races for similar incidents
Bullshit – if you recall, Froome was “disqualified” from the 2010 Giro for taking a toe up a mountain from a moto to get to his team car, even though he had already radioed in and retired from the race. He quit due to injury and was way behind the peloton, but still got penalised by the UCI. No special treatment for him. If Quintana doesn’t get disqualified for holding on to a motorbike in the last few kilometers of a stage where he is trying to get time on the yellow jersey to go for an overall win, then there’s something very wrong with the rules.
And Niall King, have you seen those crowds? I would probably have punched more than one of them in the face. Three riders came off their bikes yesterday because of unruly fans and it’s up to the UCI to protect the riders’ safety during the race – that’s why they didn’t disqualify Froome for hitting that guy to stay out of the way. They did fine him though, so again, no special treatment.
Wow why so many Froome haters ,I guess he is that good
dodgy, how did he think it wouldn’t be picked up?
At least it was a neutral tow.
He just seems so passive on the road as regards tactics. No point in waiting till the last couple of stages and going on big attacks, more than likely too late. Sky race from week one whereas Movistar seem to just wait and see.
He tried to attack, twice, but didnt have the legs..
Hopefully he is penalised for that. Outright cheating and presumably would’ve lost even more time without doing that.
Hard to defend but probably couldn’t get around the moto and just grabbed on to stop crashing into it if it stopped suddenly due to crazy crowds etc. don’t think he is that kind of rider. Willing to give him benefit of the doubt given the situation.
Noting being said about Frooms abuse of the yellow jersey on the 32km to go mark. Pulling up for Stannard and Row when they crashed therefore neutralising the race until he had he’s friends back in to ride/protect him.
It was picked up here. Certainly testing the boundary of the gentlemans rules. I was amazed to see it happen, Euro sport reckoned he had a mechanical but to my eyes he was looking to get his boys back.

Let’s call a spade a spade it’s cheating isn’t it.
It looked to me like he stopped for a pee – look closely at the video
Stopping for a piss with 32km to go in a reduced group? I don’t think so.
He asked them to slow, they did. They had every right not to slow down. Bit of gamesmanship for sure. Bertie or Nibbles wouldn’t have waited for his domestiques, and quite rightly too!
As the yellow jersey he can do this. Remember Bradley Wiggins neutralising the tour when in yellow following the tacks being thrown on the road causing many riders to puncture. The yellow jersey deserves respect as was stated in Adam Yates comments after yesterday’s disastrous stage.
The yellow jersey deserves respect, Froome waiting for his team mates is disrespectful
The yellow jersey deserves respect for crashes and extreme exigencies. His teammates crashing is not such a circumstance. It ain’t a sportive, it’s a race.
As Gavin said, he didn’t force anyone to slow down, they obliged. Not really an issue. Quintana showed zero respect for the yellow by not only riding past Froome while he’s on foot with no bike, but as we see here using a motorbike to help him past. Let’s focus on the real lack of sportsmanship here.
You do no it’s against the rules to advance without a bike don’t you? Perhaps Quintana should have given him his own bike
It’s against the rules to cross the finish line without a bike. Froome had little choice but to move forward to an open space where there was some possibility of his team car (or, as it transpired, the Mavic car) stopping and giving him a replacement bike. He stopped running as soon as he got into a bit of open space. Or should he have stopped dead and stood in the middle of that unruly crowd of nutters and done absolutely nothing to try to recover some time after a crash that broke his bike in two through absolutely no fault of his own? Don’t be ridiculous.
Quintana may have been holding on for safety. He’s obviously seen the crash and maybe safety instinct kicked in. I’m happy to give him the benefit of the doubt. No one really won in that incident.
Exactly Froome’s thoughts also according to an interview in French papers.
Ian Read please show this clip to Bryan and while you’re at it, tell him to join Facebook
No.
Looks way more like someone holding something solid in the carnage trying to get by the crowds. we all do same in traffic
I started out hoping Quintana would win but I am now shouting for Froomey. Quintana is just so one dimensional and this video just proves it. At least Contador, Nibali and Froome are good TV

Do save me all these highlights.
Cheating little bastard

Likely not the whole story. The chaos of that stage is the story.
that has got to have a fine attached or some sort of penalty, #cheating? @UCI_cycling @Movistar_Team @carltonkirby
He’s gone
Doesn’t matter what happened in that stage either way Quintana DOESN’T win the tour and Froome WILL, get over it Froome is the real deal
