Tinkoff rider Daniele Bennati has posted photos on Twitter showing nails on a section of the route of today’s stage of the Giro d’Italia in what appears to be attempted sabotage.

Bennati, who is not riding the Giro as he recovers from an injury he suffered earlier in the season, posted the photos earlier this morning of the nails on the gravelled climb of Alpe di Poti.

The climb is just 20 kilometres from the end of the 186-kilometre stage which takes the riders from Foligno to Arezzo.

It’s not the first time that such an incident has taken place. In the 2012 Tour de France for example, tacks were thrown on the route of the fourteenth stage resulting in 30 riders puncturing.
