Nacer Bouhanni withdrew from the French Road Race Championships early on yesterday due to a hand injury. The Cofidis rider needed four stitches in his hand after an altercation the night before the race with some guests in the hotel he was staying in.

His team issued a press release saying: “The night before the race, Nacer Bouhanni and his brother (Rayane) had suffered incessant noise at night from individuals present in the adjoining hotel room. Nacer asked them to stop being a nuisance and was then assaulted by these drunken people. He hurt his right hand and was taken to hospital to get four stitches. He did not suffer a fracture.”

According to L’Equipe, the French sprinter was awoken at 4am by the drunken guests at his hotel near Besançon, where the Cofidis riders were staying.

Cofidis said that due to his injuries and a lack of sleep, he withdrew from the race after just 40 kilometres. He was said to have been visibly suffering with his hand injury. They also stated he will line up at the Tour de France which starts next weekend at Mont-Saint-Michel.

Arthur Vichot (FDJ) won the title at the end of a 248.9km course around Vesoul.
