Nacer Bouhanni (Cofidis) was first across the line at the EuroEyes Cyclassics WorldTour race in Hamburg today but was disqualified afterwards for what the race jury saw as an irregular sprint.

Victory instead went to Caleb Ewan (Orica – BikeExchange) with John Degenkolb (Team Giant-Alpecin) second and Giacomo Nizzolo (Trek-Segafredo) in third. It was the 22 year-old Australian sprinter’s first WorldTour win.

A breakaway group came close to denying the sprinter’s their opportunity, only being caught inside the last kilometre. A number of riders towards the front were then caught up in a crash as the sprint started in earnest. In the rush to the line, Nizzolo was the first to launch his sprint.

Bouhanni then came around the Italian, being pushed close by Ewan. However, the French rider then veered right in the closing metres in Ewan’s direction. Bouhanni threw his arms up in the air in celebration but after a review by the race commissaires, he was then disqualified.
