A man in the UK sent a tweet this morning claiming that he had hit a cyclist. Rayhan Qadar, 21, tweeted ‘Think I just hit a cyclist. But I’m late for work so had to drive off lol.’

The tweet was retweeted numerous times and Qadar received some vitriolic responses. The police launched an investigation into the tweet and his bosses at stockbroking firm Hargreaves Lansdown dismissed the graduate from his job.

Qadar tweeted the message to his 1,306 followers on his way to work in Bristol. The Cardiff University graduate later issued an apology on Twitter saying: “My previous tweet about the cyclist was obviously not true.

“I did not hit cyclist. Not today. Not ever. A bad joke on my part it seems.”

A spokesman for Hargreaves Lansdown – which sells shares and investment funds – said today: “One of our employees has failed to conduct themselves to the standards we expect of our staff.

“We find these online comments totally unacceptable.

“Upon becoming aware of this issue we have terminated this person’s employment with immediate effect.”
