Former Giro d’Italia winner Michele Scarponi has died after being hit by a van while training in Filottrano in the province of Ancona. The accident happened this morning at a crossroads close to his home.

“This is a tragedy too big to be written,” his Astana team said in a statement. “We left a great champion and a special guy, always smiling in every situation, he was a real mile stone and a landmark for everyone in the Astana Pro Team.”

“The Astana Pro Team clings to the Michele family in this incredibly painful moment of sorrow and mourning.”

The 37 year-old had returned home to his family yesterday evening after finishing fourth in the Tour of the Alps, where he also took a stage win.

Michele leaves behind a wife Anna and two young twin sons Giacomo and Tommaso. Michele’s last tweet yesterday evening showed him with his two sons wearing leader’s jerseys which he had returned from the Tour of the Alps with.

  1. Godspeed and prayers to his family, friends and team. Hope the driver of the van if at fault is charged and serves time, however no amount of time served will ever bring back the children’s father. So so sad 🙁
