Lotto-Soudal are currently taking part in a training camp on Mallorca, and one of their days involved sober training. Their Belgian rider, Maxime Monfort explained in his diary on the team’s website what it involves.

“Today was a special day; special in the way of training,” said Monfort. “At 8 am, we started the sober training (training before breakfast, LTS). I already experimented with this kind of training techniques in the past, but it isn’t a current ritual in my training program.”

“The team perfectly figured it out and this kind of training was scientifically put in its context. It was a quite intensive training, what’s a shock for the body and mind so early on the day.”

“You notice that your body reacts differently during a sober ride; also the planning of the day was changed because of this training. We ate breakfast quite late in the afternoon, for example, and also the rest of the meals are moved back a bit in the schedule.”

Wim Van Hoolst, the team’s trainer explained: “It’s a special training, a low training. At eight o’clock, before breakfast, the riders already have to get on the bike. The first hour they will already ride at a relatively high pace and there is a climb on the course.”

“Afterwards they will have to take in 30 grams of carbs per hour; the training then still lasts one and a half hour. This stimulates the fat metabolism, it’s a training based on the guidelines of nutritionist Asker Jeukendrup”
