Matthew Teggart (Team Wiggins) overcame a serious injury sustained on the opening stage of A Travers Les Hauts De France – Trophee Paris-Arras Tour (2.2) to finish in the top ten on General Classification yesterday. In addition, he also won the most combative prize after making it into the break on the final day.

The Irishman crashed on the opening stage from Le Cateau-Cambrésis to Villers-lès-Cagnicourt and suffered a badly cut elbow and suspected fracture. However, after being strapped up at hospital, he was able to continue in the race.

The race was won overall by Stephan Rabitsch (Team Felbermayr – Simplon Wels) ahead of Josef Cerny (Elkov – Author Cycling Team) with Jannik Steimle (Team Vorarlberg Santic) in third. Teggart finished in tenth place overall, 4’19” down on Rabitsch. In addition, he also finished 2nd in the Mountains Classification and 4th in the Youth Classification.

Teggart went into yesterday’s final stage from Hermies to Arras sitting in 38th place overall, but made it into the break and gaining some bonus seconds, he jumped up 28 places overall into tenth.

Afterwards, he tweeted: “After the worst possible start ending up in hospital after stage 1 with possible fractured elbow & a huge cut…I got strapped up & fought on to get in the breakaway today taking the most combative prize & a 10th overall GC! Can’t ask for much more than that”
