An unusual incident took place over the weekend at the Coupe de France Fenioux Piste where Matt Crampton’s rear wheel disintegrated at the Saint-Quentin-En-Yvelines velodrome.

The British Olympic rider was warming up and after a number of laps of the track, his rear wheel broke up as he was on the back straight.

Fortunately, there were no other riders nearby and Crampton managed to keep the bike upright for a time, enabling him to slow down before falling.

It’s unclear how it happened but according to a post from retired Australian track cyclist Martin Vinnicombe, it may have occurred due to the rim coming apart from the sides of the wheel.

“Looks like the alloy rim has de-laminated from the carbon sides of the wheel,” said Vinnicombe. “I have several of this brand in my shed that this has happened too, the bond between alloy and carbon seems to be failing, better to bond carbon to carbon as I do.”
