Matt Brammeier (MTN Qhubeka) crashed during a high-speed descent on yesterday’s sixth stage of the Tour of Utah from Salt Lake City to Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort. The former Irish champion collided with a car on the descent of Guardsman Pass in Big Cottonwood Canyon when chasing back to the peloton.

He was taken to hospital by ambulance following the crash, where he is reported to be in a stable condition.

Dr Jarrad van Zuydam, the team doctor said afterwards: “Matt Brammeier was involved in a high speed collision with a vehicle during the queen stage of the Tour of Utah. Thankfully, Matt has suffered no head, neck or spinal injuries and is currently stable in hospital.”

“His musculoskeletal injuries are significant however. He suffered rib fractures on both sides as well as a small pneumothorax. He also has fractures of the sacral and pelvic bones. Matt is unlikely to require surgery but will need some time to recover from his injuries.”

We would like to wish Matt a speedy recovery.

  1. Watch the video.

The car probably saved him from worse. He was going straight on at about 50 mph right at the apex of the hairpin. He was COMPLETELY out of control. What on earth was he thinking?
