Mark Downey looks to be great form heading into the next round of the UCI Track World Cup, as he just missed out on a podium spot today in the 97-kilometre Un Invierno en Mallorca-Manacor in Majorca, finishing in fourth place.

Downey who is supported by the Emerald Cycling Fund, managed to get into the winning group of six riders which got clear on the second of three laps.

This group stayed clear to the finish and with 2 kilometres left, Downey attacked alone. He was brought back and managed to hang on for fourth with Germany’s Robert Müller (Hermann Radteam) taking the win ahead of the Leopard Pro Cycling duo of Pit Leyder (Luxembourg) and Szymon Rekita (Poland).

Today’s result follows on from his 3rd place finish recently at another Majorcan race – the Clasica del Murs – where WorldTour rider Odd Christian Eiking (FDJ) took the win.

Next up for the Ulsterman is Round 3 of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Cali, Colombia. In the previous round of the series in November in Apeldoorn, Downey won the gold medal in the Points Race.
