Italian rider Marco Marcato has posted a photo of a damaged wheel which occurred after he was hit by a motorbike at the Tour de l’Eurométropole in Belgium today. Fortunately, the Wanty – Groupe Gobert rider managed to stay upright.

Marcato posted the photo with the message: “Hit by a moto during #eurometropoletour today fortunately I didn’t crash but again our safety in danger @ACCPI1946 @TeamWantyGobert”

He didn’t go on to finish the race which was won by Dylan Groenewegen (Team LottoNL-Jumbo).

Today’s collision is the latest in a series of incidents at races involving motorbikes and other race vehicles. Earlier this season, a team-mate of Marcato’s – Antoine Demoitié – tragically died in hospital from injuries sustained from a crash during Gent-Wevelgem. Demoitié was reported to have been hit by a race motorbike after crashing with four other riders.

At the Eneco Tour last month, the race organisers introduced a measure to help improve rider safety which involved introducing detours for race motorbikes to get in front of the peloton rather than passing the cyclists on the race route. The measure was later praised by a number of riders including Tony Martin and Zdenek Stybar.
