In what seems to be an increasing trend of spectators trying to join in with the action at bike races, the latest incident saw a man with a baby on his back running alongside Peter Sagan at yesterday’s stage of the Amgen Tour of California.

It followed on from an earlier incident at yesterday’s Giro d’Italia where a man dressed as a cat ran alongside Darwin Atapuma before being hit by one of the race motorbikes and falling to the ground.

Earlier this year, the organisers of the Tour de France produced a short video requesting spectators at this year’s race to exercise caution while waiting at the roadside for the race to pass.

In the video, they highlight various incidents that have taken place over the past number of years which could have resulted in serious injury.

Amongst the types of incidents highlighted are pet owners not looking after their dogs which have then run out in front of the bunch, children not being monitored and over-enthusiastic fans getting too close to the riders.

The latest incident in California took place on the final climb up Coleman Valley Road on yesterday’s stage to Santa Rosa after Sagan had attempted to go clear alone on the run in to the finish.
