The final challenge for the riders on today’s epic stage of the Giro d’Italia was the incredibly steep Muro del Gatto which had a maximum gradient of 19%.

The climb inside the final five kilometres saw hoards of fans on the roadside and as the leader on the road Darwin Atapuma (BMC Racing Team) raced towards the finish, a man dressed as a cat ran alongside the Colombian, shouting encouragement.

However, one of the following motorcyclists appeared to deliberately nudge into the spectator sending him tumbling to the ground.

Atapuma ended up being caught with two kilometres remaining and the stage win went to his compatriot Johan Esteban Chaves (Orica GreenEDGE).

  1. It would have been a comedy moment only for how much of an issue this type of incident has become.we could easily have had someone knocked down and seriously injured live on tv

  2. The problem on the Giro is that RAI tv director is more interested in these dickheads than he is in what’s actually happening in the race. Anybody who dresses up & runs beside the riders is guaranteed airtime
