The 9th edition of Le Tour de Filipinas (2.2), which was due to take place next month, has been postponed due to the possible eruption of Mayon Volcano, the organisers have announced.

In a statement from the organisers, they said that “for the safety of the participants and everyone in the race entourage, organizer Ube Media Inc. has decided to reschedule the event at still to be determined dates.”

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has raised the alarm to Alert Level 4 (danger on volcanic cone, caldera and all island — possibly of very large eruption and chance of flank eruption).

The race route primarily winds around the perimeter of the volcano – as well as taking in the nearby provinces of Catanduanes and Sorsogon.

The 9th edition of the race was scheduled to take place from February 18 to 21, with a mix of UCI Continental, national and club teams participating. Amongst the previous winners of the race are Ireland’s David McCann who won the 2nd edition back in 2010 and Australian Jai Crawford who won last year.
