The fifth and final stage of the 62nd Four Days of Dunkirk took place yesterday with victory going to Kenny Dehaes (Wanty-Groupe Gobert).
The 31-year-old proved fastest at the end of the 159.7-kilometre stage from Hondschote to Dunkirk, coming in ahead of overall winner Bryan Coquard and Maximiliano Richeze.
It has been an incredibly difficult year for Dehaes’ Wanty-Groupe Gobert team after their rider Antoine Demoitié’s tragic accident in Ghent-Wevelgem and his team-mate was foremost in Dehaes’ thoughts after the race.
“In January I became a father to a son,” said Dehaes afterwards. “I dedicate my victory therefore to him but also to my deceased teammate Antoine Demoitié. We have had to plough through a difficult period.”
“Life goes on and I know he still joins us. It’s hard to bear. We are gratified once again to win. I was dropped off perfectly by my teammates and was able to finish it.”
“It is a symbolic victory. It was an emotional day in the car,” Directeur Sportif Jean-Marc Rossignon said.
