The destination of choice for many years for professional cyclists has been the Costa Blanca in Spain. Amongst the teams there this year are WorldTour teams Astana, Dimension Data for Qhubeka, Katusha and Team Sunweb and other Pro Continental and Continental teams including Topsport Vlaanderen, Direct Energie, CCC Polsat and An Post Chain Reaction.

Unfortunately for the teams currently there, the Costa Blanca (White Coast) seems more appropriately named than ever as it has received its first snowfall since 1982 preventing many of the riders from taking to the roads and instead opting for the turbo trainer.

The luckiest team yesterday seemed to be Katusha who had booked the local velodrome for the day. Time Trial World Champion Tony Martin took advantage of the time at the track to test out his new Canyon TT bike. This morning, the team also faced bad weather and took to their turbo trainers instead at the team hotel.

Other riders in Calpe did venture out on the roads though including former Dutch road race champion Lucinda Brand and her Team Sunweb team mates who tweeted: “For everything is a first time. Ninth year in Calpe never had seen snow before on Benissa.”
