Frustration got the better of John Degenkolb at the World Road Race Championships today when he squirted his drink at a member of the Belgian team.

Degenkolb was trying to orchestrate a chase to try and bring back the front group in order to get his German team-mate Andre Greipel into a position to sprint for the win.

However, Degenkolb’s efforts to start a chase were being hampered by the Belgian riders who had a strong contingent up front, and would not have wanted to see Greipel regain the front group.

The 2015 Milan-San Remo and Paris-Roubaix showed his anger by squirting liquid at Jens Debusschere, who rides for Lotto-Soudal, Greipel’s trade team. Degenkolb and Debusschere could then be seen arguing afterwards.

It’s not always the case, but Debusschere is obviously riding for his nation today rather than this trade team.

Degenkolb and team-mate Marcel Kittel pulled out of the race soon after the incident with Debusschere took place.

  1. Shame because it’s nothing like John to do that.. And he knew the belgians are running their race. Besides the squirting, he followed Jens to the back of the peloton and continued to provoce him, so though I’m a fan of John, it’s not very ‘sportman’ like, nothing even close to fair play.

  2. Only doing what the Germans would have done if reversed.
Typical sour grapes.. he slagged off wiggins earlier this month..
