Following on from the recent accident in Spain where John Degenkolb and five of his Giant-Alpecin team-mates were hit by a motorist driving on the wrong side of the road, the German sprinter has posted an update of his recovery on his Facebook page.

The accident happened on January 23 during the team’s training camp in Calpe, Spain. It resulted in a number of the riders requiring hospital treatment. The other riders involved were Chad Haga, Warren Barguil, Ramon Sinkeldam, Fredrik Ludvigsson, and Max Walscheid.

Degenkolb outlined that the healing process is going well and that he has been riding on the turbo trainer “in order to get the circulation going.”

He confirmed that his finger is the most serious injury. Following the accident, doctors in Valencia needed to reattach his left index finger, which was nearly severed.

Degenkolb also stated that it is unlikely that he will be lining up in the classics. Despite feeling that he would be able to take to the start line, his physical condition wouldn’t be strong enough to be a contender due to the impact that his injuries will have on his training over the coming months.

The German had an incredible spring classics campaign last season when he won both Milan-San Remo and Paris-Roubaix.
