Many stage races around the world award a polka dot jersey to the leader of the King of the Mountains competition, but the best climber in the Arctic Race of Norway gets to wear a salmon jersey.

LAKS, the organisation representing the Norwegian salmon industry is one of the main sponsors of the race, and much of the country’s salmon industry is in the Arctic region where the race takes place. The idea behind the jersey is that salmon swim upstream, and likewise climbers go uphill. This idea has resulted in the salmon-coloured jersey complete with scales.

Thor Hushovd who is involved in the race organisation said, “It’s not the ugliest cycling jersey I’ve ever seen. In the Vuelta, I wore a blue jersey with yellow fish. That was even worse.”

Vegard Stake Laengen of Team Joker currently lead’s the mountains competition, and if he can go on to win the climber’s classification overall, not only does he win the salmon jersey, he also wins 500 kilograms of fresh salmon.
