The website irishcycle.com is reporting today that new plans to enforce the current law which prohibits cyclists from using the footpaths and introduce on the spot fines won’t exclude children. Minister Paschal Donohoe (Fine Gael) was quoted saying “I do not believe that a change in the law to allow some cyclists to use footpaths is an appropriate response.” The enforcement of this law would mean children who currently use footpaths to cycle to school would have to share the roads with the busy school run traffic going to and coming home from school. Without the provision of safe cycling lanes the new law seems to do nothing but discourage parents from letting their children cycle to school. Should there be an exemption to this law?
