A massive crash occurred during yesterday’s third stage of the Fleche du Sud from Rédange-sur-Attert to Warken, with reports of up to 40 riders being involved.

According to RTL.lu, the accident took place while the peloton was on a descent and riding at over 70kmph with a rider coming down near the front.

The report said that 14 riders had been injured in the crash with six of those were more seriously injured. A total of six ambulances were dispatched and brought the injured to the Centre hospitalier du Nord and the Hôpital du Kirchberg.

The stage was then cancelled and it was subsequently reported that none of the injuries were considered life-threatening.

Amongst those caught up in the crash were the Irish champion Damien Shaw. His An Post Chain Reaction team later reported that he had to have treatment for a minor hand injury but they expect all of their team to be able to start today’s stage.

Today’s penultimate stage will take the riders from Rosport to Echternach over a distance of 157.3 kilometres.
