Ireland have moved up two places from last week’s position in the Men’s UCI World Rankings. They are now ranked 13th in the World having moved ahead of Slovenia and Denmark.

The rise in rankings this week is thanks to Nicolas Roche’s 10th place in Clásica Ciclista San Sebastian and Sam Bennett’s 8th place in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic and following on from Dan Martin’s 6th place in the Tour de France has seen the country reach its highest position since the new ranking system started this year. At the start of the season, Ireland ranked in 19th position.

Martin, who has had an incredibly consistent season finishing in the top six in every stage race he has started, is the highest ranked Irish rider in the rankings with 2301 points which leaves him in 12th position in the individual rankings.

The next highest ranked riders are Bennett and Roche with 642 and 478 points respectively, followed by Ryan Mullen (300 points), Eddie Dunbar (247 points), Chris McGlinchey (55 points), Michael O’Loughlin (46 points) and Conor Dunne (45 points).

This high placing means that Ireland should qualify a six-man team for the Men’s World Road Race Championships in Bergen on 24 September which would be the largest team that they have sent to the Men’s Road Race.

According to the qualification system for the 2017 UCI Road World Championships: “Nations ranked 11 to 20 in the UCI World Ranking by nations on 15 August 2017: each nation may enter 6 riders to start.”

Greg van Avermaet continues to lead the individual rankings ahead of Peter Sagan and Nairo Quintana. Belgium are clear leaders in the Nations rankings, ahead of Colombia and Spain.
