Following on from his crash on the opening stage of the Tour de France, Ion Izagirre underwent surgery for decompression and stabilisation of the lumbar vertebral fracture which he suffered and has now been discharged from the hospital.

The Bahrein-Merida rider crashed into a barrier on a slippy corner in the 14-kilometre time-trial and was taken to University Hospital of Düsseldorf for treatment.

“Ion responded to the surgery very well and he feels better day by day,” said team physiotherapist Ibai Jimenez Clever. “He’s recovering slowly and now that he’s coming back home it will be even better.

“He’s in good mood and we hope that he will had a good recovery without forcing. I’m sure that slowly he can return to his level. I personally would like to say thank you to all the people for their support.”

Before his flight back home on Saturday Izagirre commented: “I feel ok as you can see on the social media where I posted my video. All was gone hell. The surgery was perfect and I’m improving day by day.

“I have only to say thank you very much to the Hospital of Düsseldorf and all its staff and doctors because they are great professional and I’m very happy with them. I hope that I can recover step by step and we will see when I’ll come back to roads. I’m not stressed for that. We will see day by day. Thank you all the guys for their support, for all the messages. See you all soon on the roads.”
