According to a report on Direct Velo, the Austrian city of Innsbruck has been awarded the 2018 UCI Road World Championships.

It would be the third hosting of the Championships in Austria, with the first in Villach in 1987 where Stephen Roche won the men’s road race and also in 2006 in Salzburg where the road race was won by Paolo Bettini.

Innsbruck had also bid for the 2017 Worlds, but had lost out to Bergen in Norway. Doha in Qatar is set to host the event next year. For 2018, Colombia and Yorkshire had also expressed interest in hosting the Championships.

The course to be used is said to suit climbers as it will include an eight-kilometre climb about 20 kilometres outside the city, according to the report. The race will be expected to have a total of between 4,000 and 4,500 metres of altitude gain.

The UCI have yet to confirm this decision on the winning bid, but an official announcement is expected to be made in the coming months.
