One of the most exciting prospects in cycling, Egan Bernal, is amongst the new signings for Team Sky and the Colombian rider has explained why he was drawn to the team.

“Because I think it is the best team,”
he says. “We have a lot of big riders and it’s a good place to learn and get experience. It’s the team of my dreams.”

“I want to learn from riders like Froomey and Kwiato and the other guys. For me it’s really good to be here and for the next two or three seasons I want to learn a lot, gain experience and learn to be better at the time trial.”

Bernal took overall victory at the 2017 Tour de L’Avenir, along with back to back stage wins. His victory at under 23 cycling’s most prestigious race cemented his reputation as one of the brightest prospects in cycling, having quickly amassed an impressive palmares in just two years as a pro.

In addition to his win at the Tour de L’Avenir, Bernal also took overall victory at the Sibiu Cycling Tour and Tour de Savoie Mont Blanc and fourth place at Settimana Coppi e Bartali riding for Androni Giocattoli–Sidermec.

“It was really nice because I won the Tour de l’Avenir and for me it was very important. Also, on that day, I saw the tweets and my friends were sending me messages saying that Team Sky had announced I would be with them. It was very nice.”

Bernal joins fellow Colombians Sergio and Sebastian Henao at the team and the brothers have been helping him to settle in.

“It’s really nice to have two other Colombian guys like Sergio and Sebastian because they are really friendly with me and I can learn from them. They talk a lot with me about how to be within the team and to speak Spanish with another Colombian is nice.”

Bernal will make his debut for the team at the Santos Tour Down Under which starts on 16 January.
