“I’d met a lot of older people, grandparents, teachers, who gave me the spiel of ‘my life went past so fast as just yesterday I was 19 or 25 and, and now I don’t know where all that time went, I just blinked and I was 80′” This is what inspired Jedidiah Jenkins to quit his job and hop on his bike and cycle from Oregon down into Mexico and just keep going through South America.

His reason for doing this was “When you’re a kid, everything is astonishing. Everything is new, and so your brain is awake and turned on … Once your brain establishes a routine, it stops … the alertness goes away,” he says. By choosing adventure he is able to reactivate his brain and turn his “hundred years on this planet into a thousand.

There is a lot of truth in what he says. Who remembers summer holidays as a child where a day felt like a week and a week felt like a year. As we have gotten older we wish the working week away and before we know it Friday has come around again and even faster Monday morning hits you right in the mush, the weekend gone in the blink of an eye.

The cure, break the routine. Not everyone can just get up and leave though so you have to make the most of the free time that you do have. If you are single or if you’ve a family just pack up and go camping on a Friday after work and don’t come back till Sunday evening. Break the routine, get out and live again.
