Talkofthetown.ie have reported that Louth County Council have approved the use of land at Muirhevnamor Park for a planned velodrome in Dundalk at their monthly meeting

The local club, Cuchulainn Cycling Club came up with the original idea back in 2010, where the plans included a 250m velodrome and a BMX track at Muirhevnamor Park. It was expected to cost in the region of €2.5m. Planning permission was granted in 2013.

However, Cuchulainn subsequently teamed up with Dundalk IT with a plan to utilise the former JJB shop at Dundalk Retail Park. However, their plans were scuppered by the students who voted against it.

At a meeting held yesterday, councillors voted by 18 votes to 10 to dispose of the land for use for the planned park, with all bar the 10 Sinn Féin councillors consenting.

There is still a long way to go before the velodrome becomes a reality, but this is a step in the right direction. The location would be not only ideal for local riders, but would be within an hour of the large populations of Belfast and Dublin.
