The Road Safety Authority has a long history of producing hard hitting TV commercials to drive home the message about safety on our roads. In the latest advert entitled ‘Anatomy of a split second’ it dramatically shows it only takes a second to cause a crash when you text and drive. The ad very cleverly plays just one second of video back and forward through the entire video cutting from scene to scene but still playing the same second. The simple message is the outcome of the video would have been very different had the driver not been texting.

While the ad doesn’t feature any bikes it could very easily be a cyclist riding at the edge of the road that falls victim to the texting driver. Some people though still text and drive and we see it on our daily commute in and out of the city. If you’re driving and you spot someone texting give your horn a quick honk and watch their face as they realise they have been caught texting. And if you’re on a bike a wag of the finger has the same affect. There is a lot of pleasure in seeing that guilty look and hopefully they may think twice about texting and driving next time.
