Guillaume Martin (Wanty-Groupe Gobert) has struggled with illness in recent days but feels that he is capable of a good result at Sunday’s Liège-Bastogne-Liège (1.WT). The Frenchman struglled with stomach problems during Flèche Wallonne but felt better during a recon ride yesterday.

Martin has ridden well in the Ardennes perevisoly, winning the Under-23 version of La Doyenne in 2015. Wanty-Groupe Gobert Sports director Hilaire Van der Schueren will count on Thomas Degand, Jerome Baugnies, Fabien Doubey, Dion Smith, Xandro Meurisse and Marco Minnaard to support him.

Guillaume Martin: “I was weakened by stomach problems in Flèche Wallonne. I felt trouble immediately, since I did not have the good feeling of the past weeks. Thursday morning was really the worst, but since then I feel better. In the recon on Friday the legs felt better, but I will only receive confirmation on Sunday whether or not I have fully recovered.”

“Of course it was frustrating because, unlike previous years, I fell into shape coming to Wallonia. But I am now focusing on Sunday. I have worked well and my form is good. If I am completely recovered, the distance does not scare me. There are numerous obstacles, but I still want to be ready with the favorites at the end. I can not give an exact prediction because I miss points of reference, but I am capable of battling with a lot of guys from the top 20 of Flèche Wallonne.”
