Olympic Road Race champion Greg van Avermaet has undergone successful surgery to secure a small, non-displaced, distal left fibula fracture, that he sustained a number of days ago while training on his mountain bike, according to ex-professional Rik Verbrugghe.

Van Avermaet went under the knife in Antwerp where the operation was performed by Dr. Tim Leenders.

Verbrugghe who is married to Van Avermaet’s sister Claudia tweeted: “Just left the hospital and surgery was perfect some extra rest days and @GregVanAvermaet will be back soon … Recover well bro”

Claudia van Avermaet outlined that her brother had continued to cycle for another 50 kilometres after his crash and had also driven his car afterwards despite his swollen ankle.

BMC Racing Team Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Max Testa said that he expects Van Avermaet to make a full recovery.

“Following surgery Greg’s training program will be readjusted according to his progress over the next two to three weeks, and in agreement with Dr. Leenders,” Dr. Testa explained.
