Giro d’Italia race leader Steven Kruijswijk (LottoNL-Jumbo) has had a spectacular crash on the descent of the Colle Dell’Agnello on today’s stage of the race.

Kruijswijk crashed into a wall of snow at the side of the road before somersaulting and landing on his back. Fortunately though, the Dutch rider emerged relatively unscathed and was able to continue.

He had been descending with Esteban Chaves (Orica GreenEDGE) and Vincenzo Nibali (Astana Pro Team) when the crash took place and was left to chase his rivals for the Giro crown.

Kruijswijk was not the only rider to crash on the descent. The Russian rider Ilnur Zakarin who had been lying in fifth place going into the stage also came down and is reported to have broken a clavicle.
